One week to go. this new show is yet another limit-pusher for Paul. I’m ever so humbled by his talent and work ethic. I can’t wait to see all these new pieces up together at the Shooting Gallery! We’ll be seeing you soon, San Francisco…

This winter I was sort of forced into hibernation by weather and injuries—a mixed blessing, really, since it gave me time to sit down and figure out What Exactly I Wanted Out Of My Art (And Life In General, Maybe). Being stuck with naught but Netflix to keep me occupied, I found myself lost in the depths of the experimental film section, which unfortunately is oh so sparse. But they DO have Jiri Barta, and the wonderfully odd works of Jan Svankmajer—including his amazing version of Alice in Wonderland. I was so inspired by these two (and the Brothers Quay, who continue to haunt my dreams even still), that I decided to jump down that particular rabbit hole and try my hand at some stop-motion film work.
There are so many talented animators in my life, and I by no means want to pretend to be one. I do love pushing myself as a photographer as much as possible, however, even if it means making absurd wrong turns in the process. This feels so good, though, I can’t imagine it being a wrong turn so much as just a little digression from whatever my path is supposed to be…
So! here’s a little something i made for Paul Chatem to preview his latest solo show at the Shooting Gallery in April. The painting (yes! it’s a painting!) is entitled “He Don’t Bow to Bad Water”, and it is comprised of hand-cut wooden gears and miscellaneous rusted odds-and-ends Paul has strewn about his studio. He is certainly one of the most creative, and limit-pushing, artists I’ve ever known.
This was all done digitally, but i can’t wait to break out my grandmother’s Super8 and do this with the permanence of film. with Real People (this means you, Jack!). and perhaps a Loom.
